The Type 44 Cavalry Carbine, also known as the Type 44 Cavalry Arisaka Carbine, is a Japanese bolt-action rifle introduced in 1911 and produced until its discontinuation. Chambered in the 6.5x50SR Arisaka caliber, this carbine integrates several design elements inspired by the Mauser system, including a controlled-feed extractor and a one-piece bolt construction. It features a 19-inch barrel, a 5-shot internal box magazine, and a full-length wooden stock with an upper handguard and finger grooves on the forearm for improved grip. Sling swivels are mounted on the left side for ease of carry. It includes adjustable rear ladder sights and a fixed, shrouded front blade sight, along with a sliding dust cover for protection. The carbine’s safety mechanism consists of a knurled knob at the rear of the bolt body, and it also has a lever-style bolt release with an integral ejector. A notable feature is its integrated underfolding bayonet, supported by a stacking hook, enhancing its close-quarters combat capabilities. Additionally, the metal buttplate with a trapdoor provides storage for a cleaning rod. Finished in blued steel, the Type 44 Cavalry Carbine is recognized for its functional design and durable construction, making it a dependable firearm for cavalry units of its time.
